AMCOW AfricaSan Awards 2010- call for nominations

The AMCOW AfricaSan Awards are dedicated to recognizing outstanding efforts and achievements in sanitation and hygiene in Africa which result in large-scale, sustainable behaviour changes and tangible impacts. They aim at raising the profile of sanitation and hygiene by drawing attention to successful approaches, promoting excellence in leadership, innovation and sanitation and hygiene improvements in Africa, and providing incentives for action beyond 2008 – the International Year of Sanitation.


Kochogo ODF Celebrations

Brief account of the celebrations in Kochogo where three villages were declared ODF on the 19th April 2010. Contains interesting examples of how the communities overcame challenges like collapsing soil (“Where there is a will, there is a way”!), and how a strong crude slogan has helped to spread the message and change behaviour.

The 2nd LatinoSan Conference will be taking place in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil from the 14th-18th March 2010.

IDS is holding a One Day Introductory workshop on CLTS (see flyer below) as well as a lunchtime session on CLTS at the event, so if you are attending LatinoSan, please join us for one or both. Both events are taking place at the Rafain Palace Hotel (the main conference venue). Papers on CLTS from the West Africa Regional Sanitation and Hygiene Symposium, 3-5 November 2009, Accra, Ghana

The bi-lingual West Africa Regional Symposium on Sanitation and Hygiene (3-5 Nov 2009, Accra, Ghana) brought together about 140 participants from 17 countries. It was jointly organised by the Resource Centre Network Ghana, UNICEF, West Africa Water Initiative (WAWI), WaterAid, and IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre, and supported by the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council.

Letter to the Editor, published in the Nairobi Star, 19th November 2009

On the occasion of World Toilet Day 2009, the CLTS Team of Plan Kenya (Samuel Musyoki, Nancy Kanyago, Kihu Irimu and Dr David Owour) draw attention to the issues of sanitation, handwashing and hygiene, specifically in the Kenyan context, and tell the story of the children in Kilifi who have decided ‘not to take the shit anymore’ and blow the whistle on those caught defecating in the open.
