Making sanitation inclusive: reflections from the 39th WEDC Conference

The theme for this year’s WEDC Conference was Ensuring Availability and Sustainable Management of Water and Sanitation for All. The theme reflects the ambitions at the heart of the Global Goals for Sustainable Development to ensure that no one is left behind in efforts to achieve universal access to WASH by 2030. It’s now a critical time for ensuring that WASH research, programmes, policies and services are designed and delivered in ways that promote Equity and Non-Discrimination.

Sanitation in Bangladesh: Revolution, Evolution, and New Challenges

Bangladesh is a hub of sanitation experimentation and model-building. It is internationally recognised as the place where Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) first succeeded in eliminating open defecation (OD) from whole villages. This and other achievements rest on a broad foundation. After briefly reviewing the history of sanitation promotion in rural Bangladesh, this paper summarises the most urgent issues and challenges related to sustaining the country’s achievements in 2015.

CLTS Sharing and Learning at Brisbane WASH Futures (Report)

Report from the CLTS Sharing and Learning Workshop hosted by the CLTS Knowledge Hub on Wednesday 18th May 2016 at the Brisbane WASH Futures Conference. At the workshop, participants from different countries and organisations had the opportunity to exchange experiences, discuss ideas, challenges, innovations and to network with each other. Topics that featured prominently on the day were sustainability, equity and inclusion, monitoring, verification and certification.

A menstruação é uma parte natural e saudável da vida de mulheres e raparigas, mas é muitas vezes um assunto tabu, de que não se fala com facilidade, o que pode levar a sentimentos de constrangimento e vergonha. Também pode fazer com que as raparigas percam a atenção na escola ou faltem à escola. A menstruação é um elemento central de saneamento e higiene que afecta a metade da população do mundo durante uma grande parte da vida.

O CLTS visa um saneamento total em que ninguém pratique o fecalismo a céu aberto, o que, por si só, tem já potencial para reduzir as vulnerabilidades à violência. As preocupações com segurança, privacidade ou dignidade ao usar instalações sanitárias podem, contudo, fazer com que as instalações não sejam usadas ou que sejam usadas apenas quando está escuro.

La menstruation est un élément naturel qui fait partie de la vie épanouie des femmes et des jeunes filles ; pourtant, c’est bien souvent un sujet tabou, dont il est très difficile de parler et qui peut engendrer un sentiment d’embarras et de honte. Parce qu’elles ont leur règles, il peut arriver que les jeunes filles soient déconcentrées en classe ou manquent l’école. La menstruation est un élément essentiel de l’assainissement et l’hygiène qui affecte la moitié de la population mondiale pendant une grande partie de leur vie.

Handbook on Accessible Household Sanitation for Persons with Disabilities

As part of the national effort to include everyone, everywhere to access improved sanitation and to provide equal opportunities for persons with disabilities (PwDs), the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS), Government of India launched the ‘Handbook on Accessible Household Sanitation facilities for Persons with Disabilities’ in association with WaterAid India in December 2015.
