Blog: AfricaSan 5: Financing sanitation and hygiene in Africa while leaving no one behind

The AfricaSan 5 Conference was recently held in Cape Town, South Africa. Every three years it reunites policy-makers, development partners, donors and the private sector to discuss some of the most compelling issues of the sanitation and hygiene sector in order to look for joint learning, new opportunities and shared paths forward. This post presents some of the main discussions about financing the sector in Africa that were featured during the week and concludes with some reflections on how the sector can be financed while leaving no one behind.

Blog 3 of 3: Accelerating improved sanitation in Africa through market based approaches

Last November UNICEF’s West and Central Africa Regional Office, Supply Division and WASH Programme Division convened a regional sanitation industry consultation in Abuja, Nigeria. The consultation brought together 100+ representatives from industry, financial institutions, governments and development partners. This series of three blogs is based on the discussions held on market shaping – including the current thinking, how it can increase uptake of improved sanitation facilities amongst the poorest households, and how it is being considered at the country level.

Sustainability and WASH: reflections from the UNC Water and Health Conference 2018

The University of North Carolina (UNC), Water and Health Conference 2018 in Chapel Hill, United States, provided researchers, implementers and donors the opportunity to reflect and discuss how the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector is achieving sustainability, the biggest challenges to progress and possible ways forward to make sanitation outcomes equitable, accessible and affordable to everyone at all times. Achieving District-Wide Quality and Sustainability with the SBM-G across Jharkhand

A regional Rapid Action Learning (RAL) workshop to share, learn and plan for the implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission with quality and sustainability was organised by the state government of Jharkhand with the support of Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) in Ranchi on 18-19 September 2018.

Atelier régional sur l’assainissement rural en Afrique de l’Ouest et du Centre : Note d’apprentissage

Le CLTS Knowledge Hub, basé à l’Institute of Development Studies, WaterAid, le WSSCC et l’UNICEF ont co-organisé un atelier régional à Saly, au Sénégal, du 25 au 28 juin 2018, avec l’aide de l’AGETIP. L’événement a réuni les personnes impliquées dans la programmation de l’eau, l’assainissement et l’hygiène (EAH) en milieu rural dans 14 pays de la région (Bénin, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Gambie, Ghana, Libéria, Mali, Mauritanie, Niger, Nigéria, République Démocratique du Congo (RDC), Sénégal, Tchad et Togo) aux côtés d’experts travaillant aux niveaux régional et mondial.

The CLTS Knowledge Hub, based at the Institute of Development Studies, WaterAid, WSSCC and UNICEF co-convened a regional workshop in Saly, Senegal, 25th-28th June 2018 with support from AGETIP. The event brought together those engaged in rural WASH programming from 14 countries across the region (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Democratic Republic Congo (DRC), Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo) alongside experts working at regional and global levels.

Finance and marketing for CLTS and rural WASH: challenges and opportunities in West and Central Africa

The CLTS Knowledge Hub held a four-day regional workshop in Saly, Senegal; the major aim was encouraging and engaging sanitation practitioners across fifteen West and Central African (WCA) countries for them to share knowledge and experiences, as well as challenges and innovations in regards to Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) and rural water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).

La CLTS Knowledge Hub, basée à l’Institute of Development Studies, a organisé un atelier régional à Arusha en Tanzanie, du 16 au 20 avril 2018 avec l’aide de la SNV Tanzanie. L’événement a réuni les personnes impliquées dans la programmation de l’EAH en milieu rural dans huit pays de la région (Burundi, Érythrée, Éthiopie, Kenya, Malawi, Ouganda, Tanzanie et Zambie) aux côtés d’experts travaillant aux niveaux régional et mondial.
