Many markets for sanitation goods and services in low-income countries remain poorly developed, calling for better quality programming at scale, and presenting opportunities for new approaches and partnerships. At AfricaSan5, UNICEF, USAID and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation convened a side event that explored recent evidence and practice examples.
The virtual conference on Menstrual Hygiene Management in Schools is an annual event that enables global sharing of new ideas and 'lessons learned', and connects people working on MHM in schools in a wide range of countries. The 7th virtual conference was held on 30 October 2018 as part of the Water & Health Conference, hosted by the Water Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the USA. The presenters covered work on MHM that spanned countries and regions across the world, identifying shared challenges in programme design, implementation, and monitoring.
On Sunday 17th of February the Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Knowledge Hub hosted an Africa Rural Sanitation Sharing and Learning Workshop prior to the start of the AfricaSan 5 Conference in Cape Town, South Africa.
This consultation convened by UNICEF in Abuja, Nigeria from 13-15 November 2018, brought together industry, financial institutions, governments and development partners to discuss shaping sanitation markets in the West and Central Africa Region, with a focus on three countries: Ghana, Ivory Coast and Nigeria. This brief summarises the key points raised and next steps moving forward to strengthen sanitation markets in the region.
