Monitoring, verification and certification are essential for ensuring the success and sustainability of Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) efforts. Monitoring assesses and documents progress towards and the sustainability of Open Defecation Free (ODF) status. Verification and certification provide a goal for communities and help implementing agencies and governments to ensure consistency and reliability of desired outcomes.

Around the world people are being treated in health care facilities that lack adequate water, sanitation, hygiene materials and the right waste segregation- essentials that make health care safe. In 2018 the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres issued a Global Call to Action on WASH in all health care facilities to address this problem.

Is Africa on Track to Achieve the SDGs on Sanitation? A review of progress on the Ngor Declaration on Sanitation and Hygiene

This report summarises the results of the Ngor Commitment monitoring carried out by 39 countries. The purpose of the report is to provide a baseline three years on from the Ngor Declaration on Sanitation and Hygiene. It provides an overview of the vision and commitments themselves and the actions required to make progress. The monitoring process captures the Ngor Commitments both in terms of whether the building blocks of the enabling environment are in place, and subsequently captures progress against country-specific targets.

Equality, non-discrimination and inclusion toolkit

WaterAid has launched this ‘Equality and Inclusion Toolkit’ to help WASH practitioners leave no on behind. It introduces the most important equality, non-discrimination and inclusion principles, and includes practical activities, tools and checklists for you to apply to your work with partners and communities.

This toolkit, available in English, Portuguese and French gives real examples and many practical tools for all stages of the programme cycle and advocacy work.

Mum's Magic Hands

Diarrhoeal disease is the second leading cause of death in children under five years old. Handwashing with soap can reduce the risk of diarrhoeal disease by up to 48% but knowledge of its importance for disease prevention is not always reflected in practice. Oxfam, Unilever's Lifebuoy soap and Unilever's Chief Sustainability Office have developed Mum's Magic Hands, an interactive approach based on storytelling which uses field tested, emotional and health motivators to promote effective hand washing in communities affected by emergencies.
