Post ODF sustainability

  • Post ODF sustainability is the major issue to consider in scaling up of CLTS
  • The mechanism to support the sustainability results beyond time of ODF certification
    a) The mechanism can be established with in the community or externally applied.
    b) The mechanism to use and strengthen the existing structures was raised as important than bringing external support which may not exist in the long run
    c) The use of internal government structure might also negative implication if not handled properly by the way of imposing rather than community interest.
  • Continues support from the government is important and taking the process to be handled at macro and micro level.
  • The use of school and local institutions can help in establishing of strong support mechanism in the post sustaining of results.
  • The role of children in post ODF sustainability being vital as children learns form the process of triggering, monitoring and verification. Children are the next generation and letting them to pass in sanitation and hygiene implementation process will have paramount result in sustaining of ODF results as it will permanently bring behavioral change.

Action research and action learning
The issue of action research and action learning was somehow confusing in when we were at Awassa last year. Now the two issues are clear after making a long discussion among the participants. The following are some of the most important questions raised.

  • The difference between action learning and research.
  • What forms that action learning take place?
  • What would you like action learning to be ? How can action learning make difference?
  • The summarized responses and issues about action learning are;
    a) An on going process
    b) Documentation, learning and reflection
    c) Updating
    d) It can be constantly being done
    e) Sharing of experiences on the workshops
    f) Case studies, blogs, photo, audio/video, news letter
    g) As a principle action learning is not detail research activity but it is simple and giving value for what you are doing will help the process to be captured and documented and shared.
  • The some of the action learning points planned by the COs are:
    a) Blogging , updating ,writing case studies on issue that we face in our daily business of hygiene and sanitation implementation, HW in ODF village, and ODF sustainability, ODF sustainability, impact of CLTS, integration of CLTS with water and livelihood activities, NL role in sanitation marketing are some of the identified action learning issues for the future implementation by COs.
  • As part of sharing and learning of the outcomes of major researches that are implemented in COs,
    Ethiopia – on SLTS
    Uganda –on ODF sustainability
Kenya – on sustainability in relation to GoV role
…..are expected to share their experience.
