Burkina Faso

Established formally in Burkina Faso since 2003, WaterAid is working with partner NGOs on the ground for the implementation of projects of water supply and sanitation in 8 regions (Centre, Centre west, Centre East, East, North, Southwest, Boucle du Mouhoun and Sahel) and 40 local governments. Currently, the Country Programme is in partnership with six (6) NGOs (DAKUPA, SASO, AMUS, SOSSI BF, VARENA, and AMB) in its intervention areas.
Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) is a new concept in Burkina Faso.

Mauritania

Mauritania designed its first CLTS road map at the November 2008 workshop in Mali when many African countries were first introduced to CLTS. The first set of three workshops was given by CREPA, a Regional West African Training Centre chosen to train the region on CLTS. This was late March 2009.

A 32,000 large town (Rosso) and one adjacent rural village were chosen as starting points. This was a mistake. Today, after one year of work, 8 of the town’s 11 neighborhoods, representing 60% of the population are ODF but not the whole town.

The Sh!t Fire Burns On in Kenya

For the third year running Plan Kenya, partners and communities will be celebrating World Toilet Day on the 19th November 2009. This year has seen more organizations join the growing CLTS network. These include SNV (The Netherlands Development Organization), World Vision and Oxfam UK among others. There is increased interest in piloting CLTS in low income settlements in Nairobi by organizations such UN HABITAT, Community Cleaning Services and Nairobi City Council. Kilifi is moving towards achieving their goal of becoming the first ODF district in Kenya.
