The One Million Initiative is a six year programme partnership between the Dutch Government and UNICEF that aims to support the efforts of the Mozambique Government to ensure adequate water supply and sanitation and the adoption of improved hygiene practices for a million rural people in 18 districts, of which 6 are in Tete province, 6 in Sofala province and 6 in Manica province.

Documentation of CLTS Experiences with ASNANI in Nampula Province /Documentação das Experiências de CLTS por ASNANI na Província de Nampula

This report documents the application of CLTS in Nampula under the ASNANI project, with special emphasis on the lessons learned with respect to the triggering methodology, community and individual incentives, evaluation of open defecation free status, capacity-building needs and costs.

Pan African CLTS Exchange/Learning Visit to Ethiopia

Between the 7th and 12th March 2010, twelve participants from seven Plan countries (Malawi, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe) took part in a Learning Visit to Jimma, Ethiopia. The visit was designed to facilitate learning from the successes and challenges of one of the Programme Units (Jimma) in Ethiopia. It also aimed to increase networking among Plan staff in the region in order to support the CLTS movement in Africa

Kochogo ODF Celebrations

Brief account of the celebrations in Kochogo where three villages were declared ODF on the 19th April 2010. Contains interesting examples of how the communities overcame challenges like collapsing soil (“Where there is a will, there is a way”!), and how a strong crude slogan has helped to spread the message and change behaviour.

Wearing the message, loud and proud- how Manera’s CLTS campaign has inspired and confronted other villages to tackle their shit

An example of how successful CLTS activities in one village can inspire and jump-start neigbouring areas into following suit. The story of Manera also shows the importance of ‘campaigns’ that carry the message of good sanitation and hygiene beyond the boundaries of a given community.

another ODF. Four villages have today been declared ODF following a
fruitful follow up and verification exercise that took place yesterday (23rd March 2010).
