  • On the 27th January 2011, a one-day orientation workshop on CLTS was held in Patna, Bihar. Organized by the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), DFID supported Sector Wide Approach to Strengthen Health SWASHT Programme and CLTS Foundation, the workshop explored the possibility of introducing CLTS in Bihar. It was inaugurated by the Honourable Minister PHED Sri Chandra Mohan Rai. Dr.

  • From the 29th November to the 3rd of December 2010, IDS, supported by UNICEF, Plan International, WaterAid and WSSCC, held a Regional Sharing and Learning Workshop on CLTS. More than 50 participants from francophone countries in Africa gathered in Bamako in order to share experiences, learn from each other, network, energise and strengthen the approach in the region. A similar workshop was also held in Zambia for anglophone African countries from the 15th to 19th November 2010.

    Brief account of the celebrations in Kochogo where three villages were declared ODF on the 19th April 2010. Contains interesting examples of how the communities overcame challenges like collapsing soil (“Where there is a will, there is a way”!), and how a strong crude slogan has helped to spread the message and change behaviour.

  • The bi-lingual West Africa Regional Symposium on Sanitation and Hygiene (3-5 Nov 2009, Accra, Ghana) brought together about 140 participants from 17 countries. It was jointly organised by the Resource Centre Network Ghana, UNICEF, West Africa Water Initiative (WAWI), WaterAid, and IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre, and supported by the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council.

  • On World Toilet Day 2009, the small community of Gora, in Ioba Province in the South West Region of Burkina Faso, decided to put a stop to open defecation.

  • For the third year running Plan Kenya, partners and communities will be celebrating World Toilet Day on the 19th November 2009. This year has seen more organizations join the growing CLTS network. These include SNV (The Netherlands Development Organization), World Vision and Oxfam UK among others. There is increased interest in piloting CLTS in low income settlements in Nairobi by organizations such UN HABITAT, Community Cleaning Services and Nairobi City Council. Kilifi is moving towards achieving their goal of becoming the first ODF district in Kenya.

  • Almost 60 participants from eight countries in the South East Asia and Pacific region gathered between the 9th and the 13th November 2009 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to talk about Community-led Total Sanitation.
