    Brief account of the celebrations in Kochogo where three villages were declared ODF on the 19th April 2010. Contains interesting examples of how the communities overcame challenges like collapsing soil (“Where there is a will, there is a way”!), and how a strong crude slogan has helped to spread the message and change behaviour.

  • In the Zambian soap opera Banja on muvitv , CLTS has become a hot topic!

    Banja is televised every weekday at 20:00 hrs Zambian time, except Wednesdays when it is shown at 19:00. It is repeated on Sundays as an omnibus from 10:45 -12:00.

  • The International African Water and Sanitation Congress and Exhibition will be taking place in Kampala, Uganda, from the 15th-18th March 2010.

  • The 2nd LatinoSan Conference will be taking place in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil from the 14th-18th March 2010.

    IDS is holding a One Day Introductory workshop on CLTS (see flyer below) as well as a lunchtime session on CLTS at the event, so if you are attending LatinoSan, please join us for one or both. Both events are taking place at the Rafain Palace Hotel (the main conference venue). More details will be posted here soon so watch this space or get in touch if you would like to receive more information about the events.

  • The bi-lingual West Africa Regional Symposium on Sanitation and Hygiene (3-5 Nov 2009, Accra, Ghana) brought together about 140 participants from 17 countries. It was jointly organised by the Resource Centre Network Ghana, UNICEF, West Africa Water Initiative (WAWI), WaterAid, and IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre, and supported by the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council.

  • On World Toilet Day 2009, the small community of Gora, in Ioba Province in the South West Region of Burkina Faso, decided to put a stop to open defecation.

    On the occasion of World Toilet Day 2009, the CLTS Team of Plan Kenya (Samuel Musyoki, Nancy Kanyago, Kihu Irimu and Dr David Owour) draw attention to the issues of sanitation, handwashing and hygiene, specifically in the Kenyan context, and tell the story of the children in Kilifi who have decided ‘not to take the shit anymore’ and blow the whistle on those caught defecating in the open.

  • As part of World Toilet Day activities on the 19th November, the World Toilet Organisation (WTO) has launched The Big Squat- a movement for the toilet-less

  • For the third year running Plan Kenya, partners and communities will be celebrating World Toilet Day on the 19th November 2009. This year has seen more organizations join the growing CLTS network. These include SNV (The Netherlands Development Organization), World Vision and Oxfam UK among others. There is increased interest in piloting CLTS in low income settlements in Nairobi by organizations such UN HABITAT, Community Cleaning Services and Nairobi City Council. Kilifi is moving towards achieving their goal of becoming the first ODF district in Kenya.
