  • The Block Administration of Budni (Madhya Pradesh) aims to transform all 138 villages into ODF communities before the end of 2012. With support of UNICEF, the Block Administration built the capacity of 15 master trainers/motivators, who now lead CLTS in the Block. By the end of February 2012, 63 villages had already achieved ODF status. Manjarkui was one of the first villages to become ODF in the entire Block.

  • Twelve years into the Government of India’s Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC), a review by the Accountability Initiative, Centre for Policy Research in Delhi, using government data from the TSC website, shows no correlation between the amount of funds being spent in a state and improvement there. Although the number of rural households without toilets has dropped from 78% in 2001 to 27% as of 2 February 2012, usage remains a problem.

  • On the 15th February 2012, in partnership with WaterAid Liberia and Sierra Leone, the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Network of Sierra Leone officially launched its existence together with the WASH Manifesto Campaign.

  • Over 40 countries are implementing CLTS. 15 have adopted it as their official approach for rural sanitation. More and more countries, regions within countries, and districts, are mounting campaigns for total sanitation through CLTS. Drawing on experiences with campaigns in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malawi, Sierra Leone and other countries, this note by Robert Chambers lists approaches and actions which have contributed to success and other practical ideas. The core of CLTS is triggering, post-triggering follow-up, verification, and post ODF sustainability and progress. Campaigns include all these together with much more.   • On the 7th December 2011, the Government of Malawi (GoM) through the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education and key line ministries in collaboration with development partners, NGOs, private sector, communities and key sector players, officially launched the ODF Malawi Strategy (2012-2015).
