Welcome to the Community-led Total Sanitation website

The CLTS website was set up as part of the DFID-funded project: Going to Scale? The Potential of Community-Led Total Sanitation This research project is managed by the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

Its continuiation is currently (until 31st december 2009) being funded as part of the action learning and networking project Sharing Lessons, Improving Practice: Maximising the potential of Community-Led Total Sanitation which is supported by Irish Aid

From 1st January 2010, IDS’s action learning and networking activities on CLTS, including this website, will be funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

The CLTS website aims to be the global hub for CLTS, connecting the network of practitioners, communities, NGOs, agencies, researchers, governments, donors and others involved or interested in CLTS. The site contains practical information about the approach, information on CLTS in different countries, research papers, relevant news and events and many other useful materials. It intends to serve as an up-to-date virtual resource centre and is a space for sharing and learning on CLTS across organisations, countries and sectors. The site reflects the rich, varied and dynamic nature of the approach and hopes to encourage debate around key aspects of CLTS in order to improve policy and practice.

The CLTS website is intended to be YOUR site, a site populated with contributions from those engaged and interested in CLTS around the world: practitioners, researchers, community members, NGOs(Non-governmental organisations), agencies, governments, donors and others. The site can only be as up-to-date and comprehensive as the documents we receive, so please contribute your materials so that your experiences, information and knowledge can be shared with the wider network of those working with or interested in CLTS around the globe.

We hope that you will find this site useful and welcome your feedback
